Components for the new Range Rover Evoque model as well as the range of coupe and five-door vehicles from Jaguar would be supplied by more than 40 companies based in Britain. The total value of the supply contracts stands at a mammoth GBP 2 billion or $3.3 billion US. Companies like International Automotive Components, Johnson Controls and Magna International on Merseyside; McKecknie and Kostal in Yorkshire; and Sertec, Walsall Pressings and Kautex Unipart in the West Midlands are some of the ones who have received contracts after a global tendering process exercised by Jaguar Land Rover.
This would lead to a boom in U.K. automotive supply as well as create jobs in the U.K. as per Vince Cable, U.K.’s business secretary when he was visiting the JLR’s Halewood plant in Merseyside. The Evoque is the smallest and most fuel efficient Range Rover and is expected to arrive at the dealers end in 2011. This is the first part of the five year plan from Jaguar.
As per Ralph Speth, CEO JLR, this high amount of investment promises to be an opportunity for the UK to take maximum benefit to turn into a major supplier base for Jaguar Land Rover.
