2014 Cadillac ATS Coupe

The 2012 Detroit Auto Show saw the introduction of the 2013 Cadillac ATS sedan, the American luxury brand’s latest rival to popular German models like the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4. We’ve been down this road before, with previous compact Caddy sedans proving woefully uncompetitive (think Cimarron) or bland and forgettable (the Catera). Based on its handsome exterior and impressive spec sheet, the ATS appears to be a quantum leap forward from past efforts, as Cadillac finally takes a serious fight to the compact sedan competition.

To flesh out the ATS lineup, Cadillac will soon introduce a coupe model, with sales expected to begin sometime in early 2014. These artist illustrations provide a sneak peek at the upcoming ATS Coupe, which employs the same rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform as the sedan. From these images, the transformation from four to two doors has been done extremely well. The sweptback headlamps, prominent grille, and side character line – running along the sides and through the door handles – look especially handsome on the ATS Coupe.

Expect the same range of engines offered in the ATS sedan to migrate to the coupe. These include the 200-bhp base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, a 270-bhp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, and 318-bhp direct-injected 3.6-liter V-6. While the V-6 is expected to be the performance model, Cadillac reps have hinted the turbo 4-cylinder could offer the ideal blend of power and handling balance, thanks to the engine’s lighter weight. Fuel economy should also be better – in the Buick Regal GS sedan, this same engine returns 20/32 mpg city/highway.

All-wheel drive will be optional with the turbo 4-cylinder or V-6; the base model is rear drive only. A choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission can be had with the top two versions as well, while the base ATS Coupe (like the sedan) comes only with an automatic. Adding all-wheel drive to the turbocharged engine also means having to opt for the auto gearbox. Confused yet?

According to our sources, Cadillac considered adding a station wagon and convertible to the ATS range. However, for the time being, those plans appear to have been put on ice. Luckily, the ATS Coupe is still on track, and we expect the production version to appear later this year at the L.A. Auto Show, or early next year in Detroit. An ATS-V Coupe powered by a turbocharged V-6, delivering somewhere in the region of 400 to 450 bhp, is also likely and could be revealed at the same time.

BMW i8 Concept Spyder,BMW unveils convertible variant of plug-in hybrid sports coupe

The BMW i8 Concept has officially lost its lid, as the Bavarian automaker’s fuel mileage masterpiece is being shown for the first time in convertible format. Intended to display BMW’s prowess when it comes to mpg-related technology, the i8 will be the range-topping model of the upcoming “i” brand. Additional vehicles in the range will include the i3, an electric-powered city car.

We’ve already spotted the i8 Coupe undergoing testing, wearing only minimal camouflage and looking almost identical to the concept version. BMW appears to be serious about expanding the range, even if the i8 will remain a niche product due a starting price that’s expected to be well over $100,000. A convertible version, if one does come to market, is likely to carry an even higher price tag.The BMW i8 Concept Spyder has the same dramatic and flowing lines as the coupe, complete with a rollover bar that extends elegantly backwards to serve as the rear spoiler. As we’ve already noted with the i8 Coupe prototype recently spotted by our spy photographers, the doors swing upwards and forward, ensuring a touch of drama any time you exit or enter the vehicle. It’s a nice touch, and it’s good to see it being used in the drop-top variant.Inside the Spyder’s 2-passenger cabin is a “layered” design with 3-dimensional displays, along with an exotic-looking mix of carbon fiber, leather and plastic surfaces. One notable piece missing from the design puzzle is the car’s top, or more to the point, whether it’s a removable hardtop or folds backwards somehow. There doesn’t appear to be an excess of stowage space in the i8 Spyder’s lean silhouette, so a folding top seems unlikely at this point.Beneath the bodywork is the same all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid powertrain found in the i8 Coupe. This includes a 131-hp electric motor linked to the front wheels, along with a 223-bhp turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine coupled to the rears. The combined output of 354 hp is enough to motivate the i8 Convertible from 0 to 62 mph in 5.0 seconds, according to BMW. Top speed is reportedly 155 mph.

The battery pack is located in the central tunnel, to ensure a 50:50 weight balance, and power can be routed to the front, rear, or all four wheels at the same time.Like the i8 Coupe, when the lithium-ion batteries are fully charged the i8 Spyder has a pure electric driving range of approximately 19 miles. BMW states that the i8 can be recharged in less than two hours using a standard household outlet. A high-voltage alternator coupled to the gasoline engine provides extra power, or additional driving range, when needed.

Look for the BMW i8 Coupe to arrive sometime in 2014, with the Spyder variant to follow shortly thereafter.

The latest auto car news that was written in the Michael Gauthier reports that the CEO of the Ferrari Group, Amedeo Felisa in an interview, very recently has hinted that the company is taking into account engines of six cylinder for their cars on the road although they are committed to V12 engines. While speaking to Autocar, he has said that their hybrid system would not be just about creating power but it will also be about saving energy. He further states that this technology is however, expensive in today’s time but is positive that the evolution will lower the cost as well as the weight. He has declined to say anything about the detailed specifications but has stated that the technology would allow them to continue to offer V12 engines and might be featured to all the models in the future as standard features.
Interestingly, he has hinted that they are considering engines of six cylinder for their on road cars. However, the decision is still to be made and have to wait for many years to come to a final decision. So let us see if the tradition changes and we are offered with something new.
